Who says gringos don’t like soccer?

Soccer

While looking for things for my apartment in New Orleans, I saw this charming conjunto for $199.99 at Royal Furniture at 2440 St. Claude Avenue. Could this be a testament to the growing popularity of soccer in the U.S.? Most of Royal’s clients are black, but I wondered if this wasn’t a special order for some of the tens of thousands of Mexicans who immigrated to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. They were largely responsible for the cleanup and reconstruction of the city.

I wouldn’t put it past a Mexican sports fan to acquire such furnishings. No different than houses in my hometown painted Green Bay Packers’ colors. Eek!
Yes, I do remember reading about Mexicans immigrating to New Orleans to reconstruct the city—-and I read about the little stink Rev. Jesse Jackson and Mayor Nagin raised about it, that Nagin in particular did not want Nuevo Orleans run by Mexican workers. Heavens no, Dios nos sálve!

FEMA = Find Every Mexican Available.
I think the Soccer settee and ottoman would be a wonderful addition to your home, David.

Serendipia, coincidencia…

Wasn’t aware that Mexicans helped to reconstruct New Orleans. Will look further in to it.

Well with the World Cup coming up in the summer of 2010 we can expect to see & hear more about Soccer here in the states… Personaly I am a big fan of Mexico’s National team. However, you won’t find one article of soccer gear in my home… not really sure why not…

Forget that you found a soccer (futbol) chair in New (now Nuevo?) Orleans…what’s with this $199.99 price tag?!?!?!?! And if it is geared towards Mexican patrons…another example of trying to ripoff the natives. Chair sells for $100 at Bed, Bath & Beyond (even in Katrina territory)..and i’m quite sure they sell it at my local pulga for $55. Last time I was in New Orleans (Feb 2009), I was quite surprised to find Dominicans…also imported in, but more for service industry of parking cars…didn’t run into any Paisanos.
p.s., If they start importing soccer chairs in Chivas or Club America colors, then, and only then will I believe they are targeting the Mexican population.
